The Destructive Power of Pride

Proverbs 29:23 (NKJV)

“A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.”

Pride is one of the most destructive attitudes we can allow into our hearts because it slowly convinces us that we are sufficient without God, wiser than others, and deserving of recognition. Pride can damage marriages, friendships, ministries, and churches because it makes us unwilling to admit when we are wrong, receive correction, forgive others, or submit to God’s Word. What begins as self-confidence can eventually become self-exaltation, and Scripture warns that pride ultimately leads to humiliation and downfall. The answer is not to think less of our God-given abilities, but to recognize that everything we have comes from Him and should be used for His glory. “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6, NKJV). Every day, we should ask God to expose pride in our hearts and replace it with the humility of Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have allowed pride to control my thoughts, words, and actions. Search my heart and reveal anything that keeps me from humbly depending upon You. Help me to receive correction, serve others without seeking recognition, and give You the glory for every blessing and ability You have given me. Keep me from the destructive path of pride and teach me to walk daily in humility, obedience, and love. May my life honor You rather than myself. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
