The Importance of Adhering to Sound Doctrine

2 Timothy 4:1-4 NKJV I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

The Apostle Paul solemnly charges Timothy to “Preach the word!” and to remain faithful in proclaiming God’s truth, whether it is welcomed or rejected. A preacher’s responsibility is not to entertain people, satisfy itching ears, or soften the message to gain popularity, but to faithfully proclaim the whole counsel of God, including the truths of sin, repentance, holiness, judgment, and salvation through Jesus Christ. Charles H. Spurgeon is often attributed the pointed warning, “If you make the church a place of entertainment, you will have a congregation of clowns, not Christians,” commonly expressed in the familiar phrase about “clowns entertaining goats.” However, the exact wording and attribution of this saying are disputed, so it should be shared with caution. The warning behind it remains important: when entertainment replaces biblical preaching, people may become more concerned with being pleased than being transformed by God’s Word. As Paul warned, some will turn away from sound doctrine and follow teachers who tell them what they want to hear. The church must never sacrifice biblical truth for popularity, because the preacher is called to proclaim God’s Word faithfully, and believers are called to receive it with obedient hearts (Acts 20:27; Galatians 1:10; 2 Timothy 3:16–17). May our churches remain grounded in sound doctrine and committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, give our pastors and preachers the courage and conviction to proclaim Your Word faithfully, without compromise or fear of rejection. Guard our churches against false teaching and the temptation to replace sound doctrine with entertainment and pleasing words. Give us hearts that hunger for Your truth, even when it challenges our attitudes, exposes our sin, and calls us to repentance. Help us to remain faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ and to grow in spiritual maturity through the truth of Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your servant in Christ, Tom
