Practice What You Preach

Matthew 23:1-7 NKJV

Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, 2 saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. 4 For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. 6 They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’

Jesus warned the people about the religious leaders who taught God’s commandments but failed to live according to what they preached. They were more concerned with receiving honor, recognition, and praise from others than with sincerely serving God. This passage reminds believers that our faith must be more than words; it must be reflected in our daily actions, attitudes, and relationships with others. As Christians, we must be careful not to point out the faults of others while ignoring the sin and shortcomings in our own lives. God desires hearts that are humble, sincere, and obedient to His Word. Our lives should reflect the character of Christ so that others see the truth of the gospel not only in what we say but also in how we live.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help me to live according to the truths I profess and to practice what I teach others from Your Word. Guard my heart against pride, hypocrisy, and the desire for recognition from others. Give me a humble spirit and a sincere desire to honor You in all that I do. May my words and actions reflect the character of Jesus Christ and point others toward Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your servant in Christ,

Tom
