Guarding Against a Distorted Gospel

2 Corinthians 11:4 (NKJV)
For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!
In 2 Corinthians 11:4, the apostle Paul warns believers about the danger of accepting another Jesus, a different spirit, or a different gospel than the one they had received. This warning remains relevant today, as some teachings distort God’s Word by watering down the truth about sin, repentance, holiness, and salvation through Jesus Christ alone. A gospel that promises blessings without obedience, forgiveness without repentance, or salvation without the cross is not the gospel the apostles preached. Paul reminds us in Galatians 1:8-9 that we must reject any message that contradicts the true gospel, while Acts 17:11 commends the Bereans for examining the Scriptures daily to determine whether what they heard was true. The solution is to become firmly rooted in God’s Word, test every teaching against (1 John 4:1), and follow faithful teachers who rightly handle the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). We must never allow popular opinions or pleasing messages to replace biblical truth. Instead, let us hold fast to the gospel that declares we are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Ephesians 2:8-9).
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word as the foundation of truth. Protect us from false teachings and messages that distort the gospel of Jesus Christ. Give us discernment to recognize error, wisdom to test every teaching against Scripture, and courage to stand firm in the truth even when it is unpopular. Help us grow in our understanding of Your Word and remain faithful to the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ alone. May our lives reflect the truth we profess, and may we faithfully share Your unchanging message with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Your servant in Christ
Tom
