Who Are You Friends With?

James 4:4
Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God

.

Choosing between the world and God is a decision that shapes every part of our lives. James 4:4 in the New King James Version (NKJV) makes this clear: “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” This verse challenges us to examine our loyalties and the company we keep. The question is simple but profound: who are you friends with?

Understanding Friendship with the World

The "world" in this context refers to values, desires, and systems that oppose God’s ways. Friendship with the world means aligning ourselves with things that pull us away from God’s purpose. This can include prioritizing material success, chasing approval from others, or indulging in selfish desires.

For example, someone might spend most of their time and energy on social status, entertainment, or wealth, believing these will bring happiness. While these things are not inherently wrong, when they become the center of our lives, they can crowd out our relationship with God. The Bible warns that such attachments create conflict with God’s will.

What It Means to Be a Friend of God

Being a friend of God means choosing His ways over the world’s. It means seeking His guidance, valuing His truth, and living according to His principles. This friendship is not about perfection but about commitment and trust.

James 2:23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.

Practical ways to cultivate this friendship include:

  • Daily prayer and reflection to stay connected with God’s voice.

  • Reading Scripture to understand His character and commands.

  • Surrounding yourself with a community that encourages spiritual growth.

  • Making choices that reflect God’s values, even when they are unpopular or difficult.

These actions help us resist the pull of worldly influences and deepen our relationship with God.

The Cost of Divided Loyalties

James 4:4 warns that friendship with the world makes us enemies of God. This means divided loyalties create tension and distance in our spiritual lives. When we try to serve both God and the world, we end up pleasing neither fully.

Consider the example of someone who wants to live a godly life but also chases after fame or wealth at any cost. This divided focus can lead to stress, guilt, and a sense of emptiness. The Bible calls us to choose one path wholeheartedly.

Making a Clear Choice

The decision is not always easy. The world offers many attractions and distractions. But the verse challenges us to reflect honestly on where our hearts lie. Are we more influenced by worldly desires or by God’s love?

To make a clear choice:

  • Identify areas where worldly values dominate your life.

  • Pray for strength to turn away from those influences.

  • Commit to daily steps that build your friendship with God.

  • Remember that God’s friendship brings peace, purpose, and true joy.
