What True Discipleship Looks Like

Luke 9:23-25 23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?

Jesus’ call to discipleship in Luke 9:23-25 NKJV challenges every believer to consider what it truly means to follow Him. In these verses, Jesus sets a clear and demanding standard for those who want to be His disciples. This devotional explores the depth of His call and what it requires from us today.

Understanding Jesus’ Call

Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” This statement is not just an invitation but a call to a radical lifestyle change. To deny oneself means to put aside personal desires, ambitions, and comforts. It requires a daily commitment to surrender our will to God’s will.

Taking up the cross daily points to embracing suffering, sacrifice, and challenges that come with following Jesus. The cross was a symbol of death and shame in Jesus’ time, yet He asks us to carry it willingly. This means accepting hardships and even rejection for the sake of Christ.

Following Jesus is an active, ongoing process. It is not a one-time decision but a daily walk of obedience and faith. True discipleship involves aligning our actions, thoughts, and priorities with Jesus’ teachings.

The Cost of Discipleship

Jesus warns that gaining the whole world is worthless if we lose our soul. This highlights the eternal perspective disciples must have. The temporary pleasures and gains of this life cannot compare to the value of our soul’s salvation.

Many people chase success, wealth, or popularity, but Jesus calls us to a different path. He asks us to consider what we are willing to give up to follow Him. The cost may include relationships, comfort, or even personal dreams. Yet, the reward is eternal life and a deep, unshakable peace.

Practical Steps to Follow Jesus Daily

  • Self-denial: Reflect on areas where personal desires conflict with God’s will. Pray for strength to surrender those areas.

  • Embrace challenges: When facing difficulties, remember that carrying your cross is part of discipleship. Seek God’s help to endure and grow.

  • Stay committed: Make daily choices that reflect your commitment to Jesus. This can include prayer, reading Scripture, and serving others.

  • Focus on eternity: Keep your eyes on the eternal reward rather than temporary gains. Let this perspective guide your decisions.

Living Out True Discipleship

True discipleship transforms how we live. It affects our relationships, work, and how we handle trials. When we deny ourselves and follow Jesus, we become more loving, patient, and humble. Our lives become a testimony of God’s grace and power.

Jesus’ call is demanding but also full of hope. He promises that those who lose their life for His sake will save it. This paradox reminds us that true life is found in surrender, not self-preservation.
