Colossians 4:6
Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
When was the last time you had a conversation with someone that didn't end well. Perhaps, an argument over politics, religion, finances, or some other touchy subject? Did you do anything to resolve the conflict peaceably? Or did you stick to your guns and stand in stubborn pride?
I am not advocating that we should compromise the true things of God just to get along, but we can take the high road and do more to prevent the arguments and divisions we have with others by learning to control our tongues and season our speech with grace.
I think the reason so many relationships are ruined is because a missing and vital ingredient in our speech - salt that is grace.
Jesus said we are to be the salt of the earth (Matthew 5). That is to be a good and flavorful seasoning in otherwise a bland and tasteless world.
The minute we resort to letting our speech go uncontrolled, we bring ruin to our testimony. We might start a conversation with all good intentions of keeping reserved and our speech gentle.
But if we let ourselves to be consumed by another's opinion the we do not agree with, it won't be long before we get caught up in saying or doing something that we will soon regret.
So, my friends, be sure to add a little salt to your next conversation. The results might surprise you!
Blessings,
Tom
